5.3. Syllabus

The course will address the following topics:

Topic 1. End of dictatorships. Press, intellectuals, churches in the democratic way out: how alternative transition and the role of the main actors gestate. The Transition models.

Topic 2. Treatment towards Human Rights violation. Trial of the military Juntas. Example of Argentina. Human rights organizations in the framework of the new social movements. Delegative democracy and debate on presidentialism.

Topic 3. Memory. Construction and durability. Transformations of former revolutionaries 60-70; the military and look to the past; the problem of memory to recover and punish the past; Human Rights and Democracy: scope and new subjects.

Topic 4. Fractures and politics of memory. Struggles for truth and justice in relation to traumatic past marked by state terrorism.

Topic 5. Sources and archives of repression. "Places" and stories from memory.

Topic 6. Dictatorships and democracies in Latin America: Insights on building the stories of the recent past. The challenges of history of the recent past: research and teaching.
